Attorneys for 1,353 people who allege that they suffered horrific abuse at the hands of local Catholic priests reached the settlement after months of negotiations

The Archdiocese of Los Angeles has agreed to pay $880 million to 1,353 people who alleged they were sexually abused as children by priests.

The settlement is the highest single payout by an archdiocese, experts said, and brings Los Angeles’s cumulative payout in sex abuse lawsuits to more than $1.5 billion.

The country’s largest archdiocese previously paid $740 million to victims of abuse in various settlements.
