A suspected hantavirus outbreak on a Netherlands-based cruise ship has left three people dead and three others ill on the Atlantic. The incident has renewed focus on how rodent-borne virus particles can spread indoors during routine cleaning.

While rare, the disease can be transmitted to humans through inhalation of airborne particles from dried rodent droppings.
