May 3 (UPI) -- Three passengers on a cruise ship off West Africa have died from suspected hantavirus and at least three others are receiving medical treatment, cruise and health officials said Monday.

The virus usually spreads by contact with the urine or feces of infected rodents like rats and mice. It can cause a severe and sometimes deadly lung infection.

A suspected hantavirus outbreak on the MV Hondius has left three people dead and three ill off Cape Verde. The WHO is coordinating medical evacuation and assessing risks for passengers still on board.
