Feb. 2 (UPI) -- Laura Fernandez Delgado was elected president of Costa Rica after winning the first round of the country's presidential election. Fernandez will take office May 8 and will become the second woman to lead the Central American nation.

Conservative populist Laura Fernández won Costa Rica’s presidency in a first-round victory, securing 48.3% of the vote versus 33.4% for her closest rival, Álvaro Ramos. She aims to continue the political agenda of outgoing President Rodrigo Chaves, while Ramos conceded and pledged a “constructive opposition.” Fernández’s win will be formally confirmed after a manual vote count begins Tuesday.
