Daniel Woodrell, who wrote the book ‘Winter’s Bone,’ died Friday of pancreatic cancer. He wrote ‘country noir’ stories, three of which became major motion pictures.

His tales of violence and squalor in his native Ozarks had the timeless quality of fables and inspired several movies.
