The large fee is the latest example of the White House’s inserting itself into corporate deal making in unusual and aggressive ways.

Investors including Oracle and Silver Lake are making payments to the US Treasury as part of an agreement transferring control of TikTok’s American operations from ByteDance to a new US-led venture.

TikTok's Chinese owner, ByteDance, in January finalised a deal to establish a majority American-owned joint venture that will secure US data, to avoid a US ban on the short video app used by over 200 million Americans.
