Hope suffered serious injuries which required hospital treatment.

Oldham have reported the incident to police and supplied CCTV footage to aid an investigation.

According to the Daily Mail, a Chesterfield player is alleged to have been the perpetrator.

SunSport has tried to reach the club for comment with the Spirites releasing a statement on the matter.

It reads: "Following an incident which took place after Saturday’s game at Oldham Athletic, we are aware of an allegation relating to an un-named Chesterfield player.

"We are assisting Greater Manchester Police with their enquiries. As this is an ongoing investigation, no further comment will be made at this stage."

The Latics confirmed Hope will spend a few weeks out of action recovering from his injuries.

The club are supporting Hope in his recovery and wished him the best while he recuperates.

Oldham will make no further comment while police continue to investigate the crime.

A Greater Manchester Police spokesperson said: "At around 1.50pm on Sunday 4 September 2022, we received a report of an assault at Boundary Park on Saturday 3rd.

"An investigation is underway."

Hope is in his second season at Boundary Park and made a good start to the campaign following the club's relegation from League Two last season.

He has scored three goals in seven games despite Oldham's continued struggles, with John Sheridan's side picking up just two wins.

The Latics were relegated in controversial circumstances last season as fans protested the former owners.

A pitch invasion resulted in a match against Salford being halted before it was later finished behind closed doors.
