Nintendo “implemented further salary increases” in April, but 10% was 2023

It was widely reported that Nintendo had increased employee salaries by 10% due to an unfortunate mistranslation by the informative NStyles X account. However, Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa has said that the company remains committed to its employees and has “implemented further salary increases” though he wouldn’t be drawn into how much they’ve increased. Nintendo is looking out for its employees while sadly here in the west a lot of employees of big studios are being let go.

“Our fundamental approach is to set salary levels appropriately, taking into account industry trends and broader social conditions. Salaries form the foundation of our employees’ livelihoods; if pay were to fluctuate drastically based on business performance, it would be difficult for them to work with peace of mind. We believe that maintaining appropriate compensation levels is crucial to fostering an environment where employees can take on the challenge of creating new forms of entertainment without fear of failure.

Most recently, we raised base salaries in Japan by 10% in April 2023. Since then, we have continued to review our compensation system to ensure that remuneration aligns with employees’ demonstrated capabilities, and we implemented further salary increases – including for starting salaries – in April 2026. We remain committed to ensuring appropriate compensation moving forward.”
