Breaking: Super Eagles fall 3-0 to Guinea-Bissau in AFCON qualifier
by Moronfolu Adeyemi · The Eagle OnlineThe Super Eagles produced a weak performance in Bissau on Tuesday as Guinea-Bissau defeated Nigeria 3-0 in their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations Group L qualifying fixture.
Nigeria struggled to impose themselves from the start and fell behind in the 15th minute when Franculino Djú drilled a left-footed strike past goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali after receiving an assist from Renato Nhaga.
The Super Eagles failed to find a response before half-time and continued to struggle after the restart as Guinea-Bissau maintained control of the encounter.
Mama Baldé doubled the hosts’ advantage in the 66th minute, capitalising on a setup from Mamadi Camará before producing a low finish into the net.
Nigeria could not recover from the two-goal deficit and conceded again deep into stoppage time, with Djalo finding the net in the 90+5th minute to seal an emphatic victory for the hosts.
The defeat came after Nigeria had raised concerns about the condition of the Estádio Nacional 24 de Setembro pitch, which was waterlogged following heavy rainfall.
The poor state of the playing surface affected Nigeria’s preferred style of quick and precise football and added to the difficulties facing Éric Chelle’s side.

Nigeria struggled to establish a clear connection between the attack and midfield, leaving the team unable to create enough openings against Guinea-Bissau’s defence.
The heavy defeat leaves Guinea-Bissau top of Group L with six points from two matches, while Nigeria remain on three points after their opening 2-1 victory over Madagascar.With Tanzania automatically qualified as co-hosts of the 2027 AFCON, only the highest-placed team among Nigeria, Guinea-Bissau and Madagascar will claim the group’s remaining qualifying ticket.
The Super Eagles must now win their remaining fixtures to keep their qualification hopes alive.
Nigeria will return to action in November for a double-header against Tanzania, hosting the co-hosts on November 11 before travelling for the return fixture on November 15.
