François Villeroy de Galhau, Honorary Governor of the Bank of France, has described Greece’s economic progress as an example of courage and success that deserves wider recognition.

Speaking during a discussion at the Hellenic Federation of Enterprises (SEV) Annual General Meeting, Villeroy de Galhau said several EU countries would like to match Greece’s performance in reducing its deficit and debt.

“I know many EU countries, one of them very well, that would like to have Greece’s performance in reducing its deficit and debt,” he said, referring indirectly to France.

Villeroy de Galhau identified two key lessons from the Greek financial crisis. First, the longer a country delays economic adjustment, the more painful the process becomes. Second, he said, reforms produce results.

He also said he was pleased that France supported keeping Greece at the heart of the European Union during the crisis.

Villeroy de Galhau expressed confidence that both Europe and France would overcome the current crisis. He also backed completing the EU’s Capital Markets Union and further strengthening the European banking union.

SEV honours technical education

At the opening of the meeting, SEV President Spyros Theodoropoulos presented an honorary plaque to Konstantinos Goulas, Director General of the Sivitanidios School, in recognition of the institution’s contribution to technical education in Greece.
