Greece Funds New Mental Health Centres in Kos and Syros

Two new comprehensive mental health care centres will be established on the Greek islands of Kos and Syros with €2.8 million in funding, South Aegean Regional Governor Giorgos Hatzimarkos announced.

The European funding comes from the South Aegean Region and will go to the Ministry of Health to support the two centres for their first two years of operation. Mobile teams will also support the services, allowing them to reach people who have difficulty travelling or require care in their familiar surroundings.

On Kos, €1.4 million will fund a comprehensive care centre for people living with dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.

According to the regional governor’s announcement, up to 85 beneficiaries will receive medical monitoring, therapeutic and psychosocial care, as well as creative activities and support throughout the different stages of the disease.

The centre will also place particular emphasis on home-based care. Three mobile teams will provide support, including in cases where beneficiaries cannot easily travel to the centre.

A further €1.4 million will fund a comprehensive care centre on Syros for children, adolescents and adults with autism and neurodevelopmental disorders.

The new centre will operate extended hours and employ a specialised multidisciplinary team. A mobile unit will also provide services both at the centre and in beneficiaries’ homes and familiar environments.

The two centres will support not only beneficiaries but also their families, parents and caregivers. Services will include training, counselling and support aimed at reducing the daily burden associated with providing long-term care to people with increased needs.

Hatzimarkos said the value of European funding ultimately lies in its direct impact on people’s everyday lives.

“Behind every funding decision there is a person. A family. A caregiver who needs support,” he said, adding that the South Aegean Region’s goal was to turn European funding into “care, security and dignity”.

The two new centres in Kos and Syros aim to strengthen mental health services across the islands, combining ongoing monitoring and therapeutic support with home-based care where necessary.
