Greece Plans Facelift for Dozens of Athens Rail Stations

by · Greek City Times

Greece will renovate dozens of Athens rail stations on the suburban railway and Metro Line 1, making them cleaner and more accessible, Alternate Minister George Kotsiras said.

The Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport wants a cleaner, more functional network. Alongside frequent and reliable services, it aims to make public transport more attractive.

“We are seeking an overall transformation of urban rail stations across the Athens metropolitan area,” Kotsiras said.

“Our aim is to ensure that the hundreds of thousands of people who pass through Metro and suburban railway stations every day can travel in comfort and dignity,” he added.

Railways of Greece, Hellenic Rail Estate and STASY, the Athens urban rail operator, are working together on the plans. National and European funds will pay for them.

Which Athens rail stations come first

First, more than 20 suburban stations in Attica will receive improvements. Renovation also continues at stations on all three Athens Metro lines.

A tender to renovate the Ano Liosia, Metamorfosi, Iraklio, Kifisias and Pentelis suburban stations is nearing completion. After the contract is signed, work should take four months.

Once work starts, crews will waterproof canopies, repair floors and steps, remove graffiti and fix seating. They will also upgrade lighting and electronic passenger displays.

Separately, Railways of Greece is upgrading 12 stations, nine of them in Attica, and expects to finish in spring 2027.

Those nine are Sfendali, Avlonas, Afidnes, Piraeus, Athens (Larissa Station), Agios Stefanos, Acharnes, Agios Ioannis Rentis and Agioi Anargyroi.

Cleaning and graffiti removal are under way at three more Athens rail stations: Neratziotissa, Acharnes Railway Centre and Rouf. Authorities also plan a full renovation of Neratziotissa, a key interchange with Metro Line 1.

Accessibility on Metro Line 1

On the former ISAP line, crews have finished work at Omonia, Victoria, Petralona and Kifisia. Monastiraki is now under renovation, and the first fully refurbished train is already in service.

To improve access, all lifts and escalators at Line 1 Athens rail stations are due for replacement. Accessibility works at Kallithea start shortly and should take 12 months.

Kallithea will then serve as a model for the remaining 23 Line 1 stations. Those works are expected to draw on the Social Climate Fund, an EU fund set up to help vulnerable households.

Digital mapping and navigation tools for people with disabilities will follow across the Athens and Thessaloniki Metro networks. In addition, 33 railway stations nationwide will get accessibility upgrades.

The plans add to wider rail investment, including Thessaloniki’s own suburban line and remote traffic management on the main line. Taken together, the works aim to make Athens rail stations easier for every passenger to use.
