Greek Debt Platform Offers Lifeline to Struggling Borrowers
by Kosta Papadopoulos · Greek City TimesGreece’s Out-of-Court Debt Settlement Platform has offered a lifeline to thousands of struggling borrowers, helping households and businesses restructure more than €20 billion in debt since its launch.
The government-backed online mechanism allows people facing financial difficulties to negotiate repayment arrangements with banks, loan servicers and public authorities, providing a pathway to manage their obligations and avoid measures such as property auctions.
According to the Ministry of National Economy and Finance, 66,578 debt settlement agreements had been completed by the end of July, covering initial debts totalling €20.19 billion.
During July alone, 2,164 new debt restructurings worth €511 million were successfully completed, reflecting the continued growth of the programme.
The ministry also reported that the approval rate for applications has remained at 80% since creditor participation became mandatory, strengthening the mechanism’s effectiveness and reliability.
Support for Vulnerable Households
The programme continued to provide assistance to financially vulnerable households.
In July, authorities approved 271 debt settlements for vulnerable debtors, including 26 people with disabilities.
In addition, 603 property auctions were suspended through the advance payment protection measure, helping safeguard borrowers’ assets and primary residences.
Bilateral Loan Restructurings Continue
Alongside the government programme, Greece’s four largest loan servicers—Intrum, Cepal, doValue and Qquant—completed bilateral loan restructurings worth €356 million during June.
The agreements covered 4,239 borrowers, with most involving mortgage loans, while a significant share related to loans held by very small businesses.
AADE 72-Installment Tax Debt Scheme
The Independent Authority for Public Revenue (AADE) activated its new online platform on 18 July for taxpayers seeking to join the new 72-installment debt repayment scheme under Law 5313/2026.
The scheme applies to tax debts that became overdue by 31 December 2023, with applications accepted electronically through the myAADE platform until 31 December 2026.
