Daughter of Chief Accountant Jailed in Bakery Tax Evasion Case

by · Greek City Times

A female accountant has been remanded in custody in Greece following her questioning over an alleged criminal organisation accused of large-scale tax evasion involving the Choriatiko (Χωριάτικο) bakery chain.

The woman is the daughter of the case’s accused chief accountant, who appeared before investigators earlier and received house arrest instead of pre-trial detention because of his age and health problems.

With the decision to detain the woman, the number of defendants remanded in custody in the Choriatiko case reached 10 during questioning sessions held on Thursday and Friday.

The first group of 30 defendants began giving statements on Thursday. They included the owner of the bakery chain and a former trade unionist from the General Federation of Greek Workers at the Public Power Corporation (GENOP-DEI), among others.

Questioning continued on Friday morning with a second group of 29 defendants. According to the case file, this group included people who allegedly formed the organisation’s operational core, such as business owners, accountants, nominal company managers and employees.

Most defendants reportedly deny involvement in a criminal organisation. They maintain that they simply followed instructions and received low fees or salaries for their work.

The questioning process remains ongoing.
