Greece recorded Europe’s highest share of summer flight disruption in AirHelp’s 2026 comparison. Delays or cancellations hit 41.2% of passengers.

About 6.6 million people flying from Greece faced disruption in June, July and August, according to figures reported by Bild. Albania followed at 33.5%, then Montenegro 32.5%, Italy 32.2% and Switzerland 31.5%.

AirHelp counted only countries with at least 500,000 departing passengers. Airport and airline tables needed at least 100,000.

Greece also ranked poorly in AirHelp’s previous summer report. Those 2025 numbers used a different measure, so they do not line up directly with the combined delay-and-cancellation rate for 2026.

About 91.6 million passengers in Europe — 27.5% of the total — met a delay or cancellation in those three months, CHIP reported from the same assessment.

Lithuania posted the lowest rate at 14%. Norway stood at 14.5% and Moldova at 14.9%.

In July AirHelp said traffic in the Athens flight information region passed 5,000 flights on 18 July, a record in its telling. It warned that pressure around Athens and Thessaloniki could spill onto island hops and other European routes, and named air-traffic-control capacity and staffing among the causes.

Germany

Germany ranked 14th, with a 24.2% disruption rate and about 8.4 million departing passengers affected. 28 August was its worst day: 49.1% of passengers could not travel as planned, CHIP said.

Among German airports in the set, Karlsruhe/Baden-Baden reached 26.9%, Cologne 26.5% and Münster 26.2%. Dresden and Weeze were lower, at 15.4% and 18.7%.

Compensation

AirHelp estimates more than 3.7 million affected passengers in Europe may have a claim. Entitlement is individual, not automatic.

Under EU rules, passengers who arrive at least three hours late can receive fixed sums when the operating airline is responsible. Cancellations can qualify too, subject to exceptions. Extraordinary circumstances — including some ATC failures and severe weather — can free the airline from paying compensation. Care during long delays can still apply.
