Greece Adds 8,000 More Subsidised Jobs for Unemployed Over 55

Greece has expanded its employment programme for older jobseekers by adding 8,000 subsidised positions for unemployed people aged 55 and over, with applications from eligible organisations opening today.

The new phase follows the successful allocation of the programme’s original 35,000 positions, increasing the total number of full-time subsidised jobs to 43,000 nationwide.

The programme is open to unemployed people aged 55 to 67, as well as those aged 67 to 74 who have not yet accumulated sufficient insurance contributions to qualify for a pension.

Successful applicants will be employed for 12 months, with the option to extend their contracts for an additional year. Greece’s Public Employment Service (DYPA) will subsidise 75% of each employee’s salary and social security contributions, up to a maximum of €750 per month.

Eligible employers include municipalities, regional authorities, public legal entities, decentralised administrations, regional branches of the central government and the Independent Labour Inspectorate Authority.

Public enterprises, organisations engaged in economic activity and local government-owned businesses that meet the programme’s eligibility criteria may also participate.

The additional 8,000 positions are backed by €144 million in funding, while the programme’s total budget is expected to exceed €660 million.

The initiative aims to help older unemployed people return to the workforce, particularly those who face greater barriers to finding employment because of their age or who need additional social insurance contributions before becoming eligible for retirement.
