Residents of northern Greece are crossing the border into Bulgaria daily to buy cheaper fuel, with petrol and diesel prices significantly lower than in Greece.

At the Promachonas border crossing, residents from Serres, Drama and Kilkis are making regular trips into Bulgaria in search of cheaper fuel. Unleaded petrol costs around 56 cents less per litre, while diesel is about 33 cents cheaper.

The price gap has become increasingly significant for motorists as the government delays announcing measures to address high fuel costs.

With measures to tackle expensive fuel prices still effectively on hold, the high cost of fuel is directly feeding inflation by increasing the cost of production and transporting goods.

Fuel market representatives estimate that the new pricing expected from refineries on Tuesday could push prices up by a further 2%.

The rising cost of fuel is placing additional pressure on household budgets and businesses, particularly in northern Greece, where motorists can cross the border and access significantly cheaper prices in Bulgaria.
