Thousands of people descended on Newcastle's Town Moor for the first of two Saturdays at this year's Hoppings. The 144th Newcastle outing for Europe's largest travelling fair has upped the ante yet again with the addition of as £3m addition - Elevate85.

Standing at 85 metres high, it's 4.25 times the height of the Angel of the North, just over twice the height of Grey's Monument, and 25 metres taller than St James' Park. ChronicleLive audience writer Olivia Sheed reviewed Elevate 85 earlier today, and was impressed by the views of St James' Park.

The site itself however is 30% smaller than usual, with the north end out of action due to essential drainage works being carried which, once complete, will mean it is 'future-proofed' for the return of a full-scale fair in years to come. Nevertheless, organisers have promised more than 400 attractions to visitors; including a kids' club, a food court with a bar, and live music.

The Hoppings will be open daily from 1pm at weekends, and 2pm mid-week, until 11pm until the final day, June 28, when it will close at 7pm.
