19 photos as clubbers descend on Newcastle for Patrick Topping's seven hour outdoor rave
by Simon Duke · ChronicleLiveThere was an early start for ravers in Newcastle on Saturday afternoon. Long before the sun was due to set over Tyneside, a crowd of over 2,000 was expected to descend at the seven hour Trick rave in the city centre, hosted and sound-tracked by Geordie dance icon Patrick Topping.
When Patrick, the North Shields DJ who has now played sets across the world, first announced plans for the event earlier in the year, the reaction was huge from the get-go, with loads of people mad keen on getting tickets. Unlike other events that Patrick's put the name of his brand to, like the Trick rave at Gateshead Stadium and one day festival as part of LooseFest in 2024, he was the only DJ due on the decks at Times Sqaure on Saturday, with him starting the tunes as soon as gates opened at 4pm.
Before Patrick started the music, there was already a decent line of people queued up outside to get in and ChronicleLive were there and then got a great vantage point on stage to capture some of the early arrivals. Patrick's Trick rave arrived just a week after he was the surprise special guest for Danny Howard's set on the first night of Radio 1's Big Weekend in Sunderland, with their collaboration giving day one one of its biggest highlights.
Chatting to The Chronicle on Saturday, Patrick told us that standing in Times Square looking out on Digital was a full circle moment for him, as he'd promoted a club night in what is now Think Tank, back when he was a teenager. He explained: "Then I was a resident in Digital for 10 years and I always used to talk about how good it would be to do the space out here, so it's nice to finally tick it off.
"It's been some journey, because I've done so many places around the town now - the arena, Gateshead Stadium, the Town Moor, the Racecourse - this was one of the last places to tick off."
