10 Bigg Night Out photos from Newcastle's nightlife scene 16 years ago
by Barbara Hodgson · ChronicleLiveThis week we're going back to 2010, when revellers in Newcastle were enjoying an autumn night out in the city centre.
You may recognise yourself or someone familiar in this selection of 10 photographs captured around town as groups descended upon the toon 16 years ago at the week's end . Judging by several of these images, revellers clearly had reason to celebrate, with groups pictured thoroughly enjoying themselves in fancy dress.
The photographs were captured during October of that year - with one included from the end of September - by Chronicle photographers for the weekly Bigg Night Out series which appeared in the paper every Friday between 1999 and 2012-13. Now we resurrect those Bigg Market scenes from our archives, allowing today's readers to enjoy a nostalgic journey back in time.
As a further reminder of the party atmosphere back then, tracks dominating pubs and clubs that October would have included number one hits Just the Way You Are (Amazing) by Bruno Mars; Written in the Stars by Tinie Tempah and CeeLo Green's Forget You. Local cinemas were screening the likes of Wall Street follow-up Money Never Sleeps; comedy animation Despicable Me and Halloween-timed chillers Paranormal Activity 2 and Saw 3D.
Elsewhere across the North East during 2010, Gateshead's iconic 'Get Carter' car park was torn down and the cranes at Swan Hunter's Wallsend shipyard were taken apart. Meanwhile, that October, Newcastle United delivered a memorable Halloween Tyne and Wear derby thrashing, defeating Sunderland 5-1 at St James' Park, reports Chronicle Live.
