Newcastle fans left the Stadium of Light empty handed in the first Premier League Tyne-Wear Derby since 2016. Nick Woltemade's own goal was the difference between the two sides, with the Magpies now four points behind their arch rivals and five places below them in 12th.

Dan Burn was also forced off with injury, capping a miserable day for the Magpies. Sunderland now have the bragging rights until March, when Geordies will be demanding a far better performance for the return fixture at St James' Park.

Wingers Anthony Elanga and Anthony Gordon came in for particular criticism, only getting a rating of 3/10 in Lee Ryder's match ratings. But it was a bad day at the office all round and Eddie Howe, who apologised in his post-match press conference, will be keen to get a reaction ahead of the League Cup quarter final against Fulham on Wednesday.
