Coventry City make contact to sign Juventus forward – Loan with option to buy deal
by Kaustubh Pandey · Sport WitnessLois Openda is all but set to leave Juventus and Coventry City are now trying to sign the Belgian.
The striker has gone down as one of Juve’s worst signings in recent history.
They brought him in on an initial loan deal on deadline day 2025. RB Leipzig inserted a conditional obligation to buy in the deal. It was to be triggered once Juve’s place inside Serie A’s top ten was confirmed.
That happened some weeks ago, with the Old Lady now in the top four. Even if that is a big positive, they now have to pay €40m to permanently sign Openda, who has struggled this season.
He has just one Serie A goal, and has played just once over the past seven games.
Sport Witness have covered Leeds United’s interest in the striker but it is Coventry City who are exploring a move.
Initial contact established by Coventry City
Gazzetta dello Sport today provide hope for Juve of getting rid of Openda. This comes in the form of Coventry City, who have made initial contact to understand about the 26-year-old’s situation in Turin.
Due to how his stock has fallen, clubs will not invest €40m in Openda, Juve will have to be flexible.
Coventry City have been handed the opportunity of signing the striker on an initial loan deal. Either an option or an obligation to buy would work well for the Bianconeri, who know that selling him permanently will be very difficult in the summer.
Frank Lampard is believed to be a fan of the former Leipzig player.
Our take: English interest could rise
Increasingly, Italian clubs view money from England as a way to correct their worst mistakes in the market. Juve have been doing that with Douglas Luiz and can do the same with not just Openda but Teun Koopmeiners as well.
As a result, it won’t be a surprise if more Premier League clubs other than Leeds United and Coventry City join the race. Juve will probably speak to multiple intermediaries to help them out too.
A deal is there to be done. A permanent move will make no sense at all, considering how Openda has failed. And a dry loan will only help Juve get a rejuvenated player back in their squad.
For Lampard’s side, an option to buy in the loan would be more sensible than an obligation.
