“Won’t stand in his way” – Manager on player’s ‘painful’ move to Leeds United

Two days ago, Sport Witness covered claims from Germany that Leeds United’s reached a verbal agreement with the centre-back.
With his contract expiring in 2027, a fee around €10m is enough for the Whites to secure his services.
Leeds United signing on track
Bild now states the 29-year-old is on the verge of leaving the Bundesliga side for Leeds United.
He joined Gladbach from FC Zürich in 2015 and had played under Daniel Farke during the 2022/23 season. The defender can soon reunite with the manager at Elland Road, as long as there are no setbacks.
On Sunday, the German club beat Aston Villa 2-1 in a pre-season friendly. Nico Elvedi wasn’t in the squad because the move to Leeds United is at an advantage stage.
His sale to the English club is ‘painful’ for Borussia Mönchengladbach manager Eugen Polański.
Manager and director confirms impending exit
Eugen Polański says the Switzerland international has asked to leave and the club “can’t and won’t” block his exit.
“He’s a real rock for us, so this is a big loss. On the other hand, it’s a question of finances, and there’s Nico’s wish to leave, having given so much to this club over 11 years. Therefore, we can’t and don’t want to stand in his way,” he said.
Gladbach sporting director Rouven Schröder confirmed Nico Elvedi’s sale is well on track.
“We’re well on our way to Nico leaving, but nothing is finalised yet. At the end of the day, it’s clear that we’ll need to bring in another centre-back if Nico leaves. We’re prepared, no question, but the decision hasn’t been made,” Schröder explained.
The Bundesliga side will collect €10m from the defender’s sale to Leeds United. Their plan is to immediately invest it on signing his replacement.
