“Something doesn’t add up” – Confusion over Arsenal deal valuation after Tottenham comparison
by Kaustubh Pandey · Sport WitnessAs Tottenham work towards the signing of Sandro Tonali, Arsenal have been linked with a move for AS Roma’s Manu Kone.
Sport Witness have looked at how the Gunners made initial contact for the Frenchman. The Giallorossi aren’t in a great position to keep the midfielder, as they have to make sales by June 30th due to FFP regulations.
Mikel Arteta’s side also reached an agreement over personal terms. So far, no formal offer has arrived.
Tottenham, at the same time, are a bit more advanced in their move for Tonali.
There has been a clear difference between the value of the two players too. A deal for the Italian would cost over €85m but Kone may not even cost over €50m.
Belief Kone should cost more
Piero Torri from Radio Mana Sport has spoke about the France international, who started against Iraq on Monday.
He initially made it clear that Kone won’t reject a move to Arsenal. This will also go down well with Roma, who need the cash desperately this month.
He said – via Giallorossi.net: “Maybe I’m wrong, but for me, selling a big player is more than enough to settle the books by June 30th. Roma won’t talk to anyone, not even me, especially given the delicate situation. A key player will leave, and as of today, I’m saying Konè will be the one to leave, as he’s not willing to turn down offers from the Premier League.”
Expressing confusion over the valuation though, Torri indicated Kone should cost more as Tonali could join Tottenham for close to €100m.
“If Arsenal are genuinely interested, he could be useful to Roma because they don’t skimp on investments. But if Tottenham spends €80-€85m on Tonali, how can Konè cost half that? Something doesn’t add up for me.”
Our take: Two factors dictating fee
Roma’s financial situation is one reason Kone is valued at an affordable amount.
Newcastle United have already earned a big amount from Anthony Gordon’s sale. They are in a position of power for Tonali’s sale and aren’t desperate for cash. The only thing driving the Tottenham move is likely his entourage.
