Director has informed club about approach from Burnley – ‘Coming days’ hold the key
by Kaustubh Pandey · Sport WitnessBurnley are currently without a sporting director and attempts are underway to hire an interesting profile from Italy.
Monchi is working within the ownership group but doesn’t have a direct Burnley role. He is currently at Espanyol, who are also controlled by Lancashire club’s owner Alan Pace.
The Spaniard said earlier this year that this link would make transfers convenient between the two clubs in the future.
Now, it looks like Burnley are actively looking for a sporting director of their own.
Initial approach made
Gianluca Di Marzio reports that the Championship side are keen on appointing Genoa sporting director Diego Lopez.
Burnley have made initial contact over a possible deal, and they are believed to be presenting an ambitious project focused around a return to the Premier League.
While Lopez is happy at Genoa, he has informed the Italian side about the Clarets approach. This is seen as a big sign of respect that exists between the two parties but it doesn’t mean a move won’t go through.
Considerations are being made by the Rossoblu, who find themselves 19th in the table. Daniele De Rossi is struggling but remains in-charge of the club.
Di Marzio expects more developments in the ‘coming days’, which suggests a deal isn’t dead in the water.
Deal could prove clever
While Genoa aren’t doing well in Serie A, they have been adept at signing lesser known talents from across Europe. They thrive on selling on for capital profits, as evident from the sales of Honest Ahanor, Koni de Winter and Albert Gudmundsson.
Besides, having a Spaniard on board can help Burnley’s relationship with Monchi and Espanyol. For Lopez, it would be a great way take a step-up as he can work closely with a veteran like Monchi. It can also open up the idea of a future return to Spain.
His exit would leave Genoa in a bigger hole but the deal can prove great for the 37-year-old’s career.
