Everton and Roma won’t clash, believe Italian sources

Everton’s owners, the Friedkin Group, remain confident that they have made the necessary arrangements for Everton and Roma to compete in the same competition next season.

Corriere dello Sport report on ‘leaks’ from Roma today. They have confirmed that the American group have ensured that there will be no potential conflict.

Roma are not concerned

The Italian newspaper reports that Roma are not concerned about the potential multi-ownership issue with Everton ahead of next season.

According to leaks from the club, the owners have already analysed all possible scenarios. They are confident there will be no problems or negative consequences for Roma.

The Friedkin Group, in fact, is confident that both teams will eventually be able to participate in the same European competition without problems.

The potential issue is that Everton and Roma are currently both in contention for Europe next season. The former are more focused on the Europa League and Conference League, while the Italians push for the Champions League.

Regulations prohibit two clubs under the same ownership from participating in the same European competition. The club which finished higher in their domestic league would remain in the tournament it qualified for.

The main issue for Everton and Roma is Dan Friedkin. He is president of both clubs, while there are also corporate ties between the two through ‘structures’ controlled by the Friedkin Group.

Previous cases

UEFA have already addressed similar cases in the past, such as Crystal Palace and Lyon, or Manchester City with Girona.

Roma sources are calm over Everton situation

In some situations, the so-called ‘blind trust’ system was used. That’s designed to guarantee the managerial independence of the clubs involved.

There is no indication if the Friedkin Group intend to do this with either Roma or Everton. But the message in Italy is that Roma are not at risk of being penalised.

The Friedkins, for their part, are likely waiting to see how the seasons end in Italy and England before announcing their plans.

With the race for Europe hotly contested in both, there is seemingly no rush to announce what they have worked out. But the Americans are confident they have a workaround in place that will satisfy UEFA.
