Andrew Seed, the Managing Director at The Odd Company, shares his wisdom with five essential tips to warm up your bedroom while keeping costs down.

Seasonal duvets

“One of the easiest ways to stay snug as a bug at night is by switching to seasonal duvet."

"A winter duvet with a higher tog rating adds more weight and warmth, perfect for those chilly nights when you’d rather not part from your duvet at all. For autumn and winter, we recommend between 9 and 15 tog.”

“When spring and summer roll around, it’s best to opt for a lighter duvet with a tog between 1 and 8, depending on how much you tend to feel the chill. Switching your duvet seasonally keeps things cosy, and ensures your home remains as efficient as possible.”

Close your curtains

“A good deal of the cold that finds its way into your bedroom comes from the windows. Regardless of whether you have single or double glazing, the chill will still find its way in as much as we wish it wouldn’t.”

“To prevent this, be sure to draw your curtains the moment the sun goes down. And when it comes to curtain choices, thicker is always better. Think of them as a cosy winter coat for your windows, keeping the draughts at bay and making your space feel warmer.”

Cover any draughts

“When the rest of your house feels chilly, unwanted cool air can easily seep into your room through cracks or gaps around the door. A simple and effective way to prevent this is by using draught excluders, which block the cold air and help keep your space warm."

"Alternatively, you can place something as basic as a jumper against the bottom of the door to stop the draughts and maintain the cosy atmosphere of your personal hibernation den.”

Move your bed

“Positioning your bed against a window can sometimes leave you feeling a bit chillier at night, even with all the extra layers of duvets, blankets, and draught excluders in place."

"One effective way to prevent this is to move your bed away from the window, as this can help stop your bedding from being exposed to cooler air and catching a chill."

"Additionally, placing your bed against an interior wall rather than an exterior one can also help to retain warmth, as exterior walls tend to be colder.”

Blankets galore

“If you’ve already switched to a winter duvet but are still feeling the chill, then blankets will soon become your go-to comfort."

" Layering blankets over your duvet adds both more weight and warmth, helping to keep you cosy throughout the night. As a general rule, the thicker the blanket the better."

" Investing in heavyweight blankets and placing them on top of your bedding can reduce the need to turn the heating on, making your space both snug and energy-efficient.”
