Canada Might Actually Join The European Union, And I Didn't Expect Canadians To React Like This

In case you haven't heard, the European Union has officially asked Canada to become an "associate member" of the EU. And what does that mean entirely?

Well, according to The Globe and Mail, there is still a lot up in the air. The discussions will focus heavily on trade, as Canada seeks to reduce its reliance on the United States, while other areas — including visas, travel, security, and much more — are also up for discussion.

Honestly, as a Canadian currently living in Italy (who also lived in London, UK, before Brexit), this alliance feels very fitting. Now, was I in the meeting? No. Do I know the ins and outs of what this partnership would actually mean? Also no. Have I studied politics? Definitely not. So, to be clear, I have exactly zero qualifications to weigh in on international relations here. What I do have is real-life experience meeting people from all over Europe and Canada and feeling a sense of home in both places. From my experience, we share a lot when it comes to our outlook on the world, our values, and even our policies. ESPECIALLY as Trump strains our relationship with the US.

And I know I'm not the only one who thinks that. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said that Europeans and Canadians are closely aligned on everything from geopolitics to AI to climate change, and that they "see the world with the same eyes." Having lived on both sides of the Atlantic, I couldn't agree more.

And although there will be plenty of news in the coming days, weeks, and months about what this partnership could look like, the internet (especially Canadians) can't help but have their opinions. Take a look:
