Trick-or-treating seems easy when you’re a kid: Put on a costume, ring the doorbell, get candy, repeat. But once you’re the adult in charge, Halloween suddenly becomes a minefield of weird neighborhood etiquette.

Is a porch light enough of an invitation? What if there’s a candy bowl with no sign? Are teens allowed to trick-or-treat? What does a teal pumpkin mean? And how many pieces of candy can a child take before you become the reason someone posts on Nextdoor?

You’re taking a little kid trick-or-treating for the first time, and your mission is simple: Make it through Halloween night without becoming the neighborhood villain. Pick what you feel is appropriate to see if you're up on your Halloween etiquette.
