Nic Smith's Cause Of Death Revealed, Kentucky Lineman Was Discovered Unresponsive In Residence Hall

A defensive lineman for Kentucky, the news of his demise was first confirmed on June 8, 2026. Coach Will Stein later paid tribute to him on X (formerly Twitter), with a statement, saying that their thoughts and prayers are with all those who were close to Smith over the years. Will even described Nic’s death as a big loss for the University of Kentucky, adding that they will keep supporting each other.

How did Nic Smith die?
As mentioned, Nic Smith was first found at the residence hall in the university during the morning hours on June 8, 2026. Jay Blanton, a spokesperson for the institute, revealed that the University of Kentucky Police Department responded to a call related to the report of a dead body. A few hours after the institute announced that a dead body had been found, they confirmed Nic Smith’s death.
Notably, Nic was 20 years old at that time, and the police collaborated with the Lexington-Fayette County Coroner to find the circumstances leading to Nic’s demise. While the cause of death was not discovered in the beginning, a report from the Fayette County Coroner’s Office has now revealed that Nic died by suicide. Moreover, the time of death was disclosed as 10:40 a.m. The university initially shared a statement while confirming Nic’s death and said:
“Nic was a sophomore in the Community Leadership and Development program in the Martin-Gatton College of Agriculture, Food and Environment, and one of our student athletes on the UK Football team.”
Nic Smith’s mother also paid tribute to him on social media
Nic Smith initially committed to play football for the University of Kentucky and later became a redshirt for the first season. This was common among freshmen who were seeking an extra year of development, or if a team’s roster did not have any space for a new player. Nic was reportedly planning to start a food business after building a successful career in the world of the NFL.

He was studying Community Leadership and Development before his death at the Martin-Gatton College of Agriculture, Food and Environment in the UK. Nic created records as a star defensive lineman at Walnut Grove High in Georgia, collecting 40 tackles when he was a senior. He even had a record of 58 tackles during the junior season. Nic’s mother, Genedra Rountree, also paid tribute to him on Facebook, where she wrote:
“I know there are more people that I can call or think who loved and cared about my son and was rooting for him. If there is any type of GoFundMe or anything posted on him do know I have nothing to do with that. I am not posting any GoFundMe or anything of that nature. I just want to peacefully lay my baby’s body to rest. Hold your children together kiss them tell them you love them check on them everyday.”
