Spider-Man: Brand New Day Has Already Made $1 Billion
by Jason P. Frank · VULTUREIn 1878, the first movie, The Horse in Motion, was released. One hundred and 20 years later, James Cameron’s Titanic grossed $1 billion after 74 days in theaters. Now, with inflation, rising ticket prices, and increasingly hyped films that encourage first-weekend attendance, a movie can make $1 billion in less than a week. In summer 2019, Avengers: Endgame made $1.2 billion during its opening weekend and now Spider-Man: Brand New Day joins it, becoming the second movie to reach a cumulative box office of $1.2 billion during its first week.
Earlier this week, Brand New Day had the best-ever Monday at the box office for a film, scoring $47 million on what is supposed to be an off day. After already scoring the best domestic weekend in box-office history, Spider-Man is not letting up. In total, the domestic box office sits at $407 million with the international box office bringing in $645.8 million. That’s particularly great because the film has done well in China, bringing in $121 million from a country that used to reliably see American movies but now tends to focus on homegrown films. (The Chinese movie Ne Zha 2 made a total of $2.2 billion last year.)
Meanwhile, the Russo Brothers, who directed Endgame and the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday, congratulated Brand New Day on its box office success. “Huge congratulations to Destin, Tom, Zendaya, Jacob, Jon, Mark, Sadie, Florence, Michael, Marisa, producers Kevin, Amy, Avi, and Rachel, and the entire Spider-Man: Brand New Day cast and crew on making domestic box office opening weekend history,” the brothers wrote on Instagram. “The gauntlet has been passed…” Hey, so maybe Marvel’s new franchises ain’t doing so hot. But they’ve still got Spidey and the bros!
