Russell Brand Defends Himself in Rape Trial
by Jason P. Frank · VULTUREThe defense called Russell Brand as its first witness in his rape trial in Britain, and he denied all charges. The comedian is currently accused of three counts of rape, three counts of sexual assault, and one charge of attempted indecent assault. His defense began by asking if he committed each offense, per the BBC. Brand loudly said “no” to all. He additionally claimed he is aware that consent matters. “Consent is fundamental, essential, necessary, and indeed, in many ways, more important than sex itself,” he said.
One approach the defense barrister used was to try to establish how isolated Brand had become following a 2023 Channel 4 documentary about his alleged assaults. “It was devastating,” Brand said. His barrister then asked, “Were you able to persuade a single person with relevant evidence to give to come to give evidence on your behalf?” per Sky News. Brand replied, “I have not.” Brand then told the court he was barred from visiting his son in the hospital because of the documentary. “The reason given by Great Ormond Street Hospital when my son was receiving open-heart surgery and subsequent treatment was due to the material published,” he said, adding, “They were unclear about what particular legal reason there was, but that was the reason they gave to my wife, Laura, and I.”
The allegations from six separate women span a decade, from 1999 to 2009. They resulted in one count of rape from 1999, one count of attempted indecent assault from 2001, one count each of oral rape and sexual assault from 2004, another count of sexual assault from between 2004 and 2005, and counts of both anal rape and sexual assault in 2009.
Outside the courthouse, Brand, who was there with his wife, Laura Gallacher, gave a short statement, per Sky News: “Due to the circumstances of today, I think it would be inappropriate for me to say anything other than I am very grateful that today’s a day for truth and justice and we are blessed that as yet we have a system that can accommodate such things.”
