David S. Pumpkins and Drunk Uncle Return to Saturday Night Live
by Bethy Squires · VULTUREWell, it’s that time of year again. The scariest, spookiest of seasons: election week. Badum-tss! Saturday Night Live combined Halloween with politics last night, bringing back David S. Pumpkins (Tom Hanks), only to be interrupted by a stumping Trump (James Austin Johnson). “Are you sad you don’t get to see your third David Pumpkin scene?” Trump asked. “I’ll save you four minutes: He keeps popping up and confusing people on the ride. The end!” He then explained the many similarities between Pumpkins and Trumpkins. Both appeared in 2016 and are orange/annoying. Incredible to realize Annoying Orange predates them by five years.
Johnson’s Trump took glee in making the rest of the sketch performers freeze in place for the entirety of his monologue (“Look at poor Bobby Moynihan back there. He flew in for this.”) Moynihan got his time to shine, however, during “Weekend Update,” when he reprised his role of Drunk Uncle. Drunk Uncle was there to celebrate the Brewers’ World Series win. “I’ve been drinking every night since they won, and also for the last 57 years before that,” he said. Drunk Uncle got confused about who was anchoring “Update,” calling Colin Jost “Seth” and “Amy” a few times. He also bravely came out as believing Elizabeth Holmes. Drunk Uncle was joined by the Brewers themselves. They said they’ve been drinking since Wednesday, but we all know they won because they smoke.
