Resident Evil Made a Killing at the Box Office

In North America, the film made $60 million, easily topping the box office. It also absolutely obliterated the franchise’s opening record, $26 million for 2010’s Resident Evil: Afterlife. That’s the second one in the Paul W.S. Anderson sequence, by the way. The one with Jill Valentine. Internationally, Resident Evil added another $43.3 million to its purse, giving the film a worldwide cume of $108.3 mil. That worldwide total beat the global final of 2002’s Resident Evil ($102.9 million), and the one for Welcome to Raccoon City ($41.9 mil). The film still has some distance to go before becoming the highest grossing title in the series, as Resident Evil: The Final Chapter took in $312 million in 2016.
At number 2 this weekend was Practical Magic 2, with just $12.1 million to add to last week’s total. That’s a 59 percent drop-off for the legasequel. Spider-Man: Brand New Day and The Odyssey held on in the top 5 for another week, with $6.5 million and $4.9 million respectively. Closing out the top five was Coyote vs. Acme, adding another $4.5 million to the pile of money Warner Bros. didn’t want. Meep, and furthermore, meep.
