Cancel Your Date in the Park With George

It looks like Sunday in the Park With George and the West End do not belong together, at least for now. The calamitous run for the intended U.K. revival of Sunday in the Park, which was supposed to be directed by Marianne Elliott (Company), is officially over. “The planned 2027 production of Sunday in the Park with George will no longer proceed as scheduled,” the production confirmed on social media. “Empire Street Productions will retain the rights with a view to presenting the production in 2028. Further details will be announced in due course.”

Originally, the production was going to feature Wicked movie co-stars Jonathan Bailey and Ariana Grande. Then Grande backed out of the show on August 2 as part of her larger process of “taking a step back from visibility,” per her representation. After her departure, the show initially claimed that “casting will be announced in due course.” Less than a month later, on September 1, Jonathan Bailey confirmed online that he would not be involved either. “Marianne is extraordinary and one of my longest collaborators and friends,” Bailey said at the time. “After much consideration, I have decided to also step back from Sunday in the Park with George.” While many rumors swirled following Grande and Bailey’s departures about recasting (Jessie Buckley? Ben Platt?), the ultimate answer was that nobody would be replacing them. In the words of Sunday itself: Move on.
