Donald Trump Stayed Up Late to Watch Stephen Colbert’s Final ‘Late Show’

The final episode of The Late Show With Stephen Colbert aired last night. It was a mournful ode to Colbert and late-night comedy in general. For most people, it was a difficult occasion. For President Donald Trump, it was a celebration. Trump spent the night posting on Truth Social multiple times about how thrilled he is to see Colbert gone. “Colbert is finally finished at CBS,” he wrote at nearly two in the morning on Friday. “Amazing that he lasted so long! No talent, no ratings, no life. He was like a dead person. You could take any person off of the street and they would be better than this total jerk. Thank goodness he’s finally gone!”

Later that morning, he was still droning on about how great this was. “Stephen Colbert’s firing from CBS was the ‘Beginning of the End’ for untalented, nasty, highly overpaid, not funny, and very poorly rated Late Night Television Hosts,” he wrote. “Others, of even less talent, to soon follow. May they all Rest in Peace! President DONALD J. TRUMP.”

Trump was a frequent target of Colbert’s jokes. When CBS canceled The Late Show last summer, the network said “This is purely a financial decision against a challenging backdrop in late night.” However, many blamed the decision on politics because David Ellison’s Skydance was attempting to buy CBS parent company Paramount and needed approval from the government to do so. Now that Colbert is off the air, however, he’ll be able to criticize Trump without CBS standards’ oversight, so this might even go worse for the president.
