Jon Gosselin says he “pretty much bankrupted” himself fighting the network that made his family famous, spending $1.7 million in legal bills after TLC sued him.
On the November 18, 2019 episode of The Dr. Oz Show, the former reality star said he refused to keep filming his eight kids for TLC and paid for it in those fees. Discovery Talent Services sued him in October 2009 for breach of a 2008 exclusivity contract, after he had a cease-and-desist sent barring crews from the family’s Pennsylvania property.
By his telling, TLC covered Kate Gosselin’s attorneys for both the lawsuit and their divorce while he footed his own. “So I financed it by myself and she was financed by the network,” he said.

He also claimed the network questioned his state of mind. “They actually hired me a therapist and a psychiatrist and they psych-evaled me,” he said. The reason, by his account, was that he would walk away from millions rather than keep the cameras rolling. “Because I would give up millions of dollars not to film and just go live a normal life,” he said. “I said enough was enough.”
Both the lawsuit and his $5 million countersuit, which alleged Pennsylvania child-labor violations, settled confidentially in February 2010. Kate Plus 8 returned to TLC afterward, with episodes airing as late as 2017.
Kate hasn’t backed up his version. She told People, “I have consistently made it a rule never to respond to Jon’s delusional ramblings, and I will not break that rule now.”
The $1.7 million figure, the bankruptcy, and the claim that TLC paid her lawyers remain his assertions, with no court filing confirming them.
