During her March 2020 Architectural Digest tour, Dakota Johnson showed off a bowl of limes in her green kitchen. “I love limes. I love them. They’re great. I love them so much, and I like to present them like this in my house,” she said.

On January 19, 2021, she told Jimmy Fallon the limes were set dressing. She’s mildly allergic to them, and they make her tongue itch. “It was hard to just ignore them, so I just lied. I went the full opposite direction,” she explained.

A Halloween duo later turned that into a costume: dressed as Dakota Johnson and a pile of limes, a very specific reference to her enthusiastic love for a fruit she’d admitted she’s allergic to. Dan Leahy shared the pairing on November 1, 2024, with a still from Johnson’s house tour.

That’s the affectionate joke behind “I hate gay halloween”: a costume so specific that recognizing it becomes part of the fun. You get to be someone’s favorite tiny piece of pop culture for a night.

In January 2024, Johnson revisited her own reference in an SNL promo, grabbing a bowl and saying, “Oh, I love limes.”
