The mudslides that swamped Carpinteria in 2022 filled their oceanfront place with sludge. Three years later, the guest cottage is gone and the main house has been stripped to the studs and rebuilt into something the neighbors barely recognize.

Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis paid $10.1 million in cash for the six-acre Padaro Lane compound in 2017, a two-story main house plus a small day cottage steps from the sand. It later carried a value near $17 million.

Heavy rain across California in late 2022 and early 2023 sent the waterway beside the property surging over its banks, burying the grounds in mud and debris. The same flooding hit other homes in the enclave, including Travis Barker and Kourtney Kardashian’s beach house.

They filed for a coastal development permit in March 2024 and started tearing in. The day cottage was demolished. The main house got a full gut, losing its two-story porch, outdoor stairs, chimney, and raised rear porch.

The rebuild added 2,146 square feet to the residence, pushing it to roughly 4,505 square feet, along with a new pool, an inset spa, a pool deck, a boardwalk, and fresh landscaping. Neighbors on the strip include Kevin Costner and George Lucas.

The couple, who married in 2015 and share two kids, once called the spot “our home away from home.” In August 2023 they listed the day cottage for a $0 one-night Airbnb stay, a nod to Kutcher’s early angel investment in Airbnb, which turned a $2.5 million bet into a stake worth $90 million.

A family booked the August 19, 2023 stay; Ashton and Mila greeted them in person, hung out with them at the property, and later posted a short video of the visit. Bet they wish they could return now for an extra night; place is off the hook.
