Jennifer Lawrence couldn’t say what sales numbers would make her new haircare company a success. She could say when its serum needed more work: she sent it back to the lab 150 times before she was satisfied.

The 36-year-old co-founded Mes with chemical biological engineer Jasmina Aganovic. The brand’s 3 products are a volumizing mist, a repair mask and a serum, which Lawrence has tested herself.

Asked about the business’s financial targets, Lawrence said: “Numbers don’t stick in here. I’m dumb but cute!” She also couldn’t answer whether Mes had investors. Aganovic explained that her original company, Arcaea, which has raised $78 million, is backing Mes.

Lawrence acknowledged the risk of launching a business amid uncertainty in Hollywood and beyond. “A smarter exit plan would be signing up for a big franchise. Starting a new company to get rich feels like jumping off a cruise ship to land on a door.”

Her product ambitions come with a specific everyday goal: looking put together at school drop-off. As she put it: “At drop-off, I want to look like a woman that has her s*** together even when I’ve just woken up and don’t have my s*** together.”
