Bill Burr Roasts Internet Fools Over L.A. Fire Chatter

· Rolling Stone

As fires spread across Los Angeles, so too has a blaze of misinformation and hot takes enflamed the internet. Comedian Bill Burr took aim at the architects of said garbage on Jimmy Kimmel Live! Tuesday night.

“I think everyone did a great job,” Burr said of rescue and firefighting efforts. “Unlike the Internet. Oh, my God, all of these fire experts. ‘Why don’t you just fly a helicopter into the ocean?’ Fuck it. I don’t know, because there’s 100-knot winds? You want to do that? You want to do that at night, you fucking lunatic? ‘This was definitely mismanaged.’ Like some idiot on the Internet knows how to manage the worst fire in L.A., sitting there in his underwear.”

The Los Angeles fires started on Jan. 7 in the Palisades, quickly spreading across the city. The death toll is currently at 13, with tens of thousands of folks displaced. Kimmel himself recently opened a donation center for those in need on his show’s backlot. But while folks are turning out in droves to provide aid and support to L.A. citizens, not everyone has been helpful. The right has blamed DEI hires for the blaze, misinformation has run rampant, and insurance companies have been canceling the plans of affected citizens. Luckily, Burr fired shots at … well, everyone.

“I love how all the chatter out there is about bands of illegal immigrants and homeless people lighting fires,” he said, citing a popular right-wing talking point. “They’re lighting fires every day! They live outside. They’re fucking cold.” As for the insurance companies: “They’re talking about looting, but CNN and Fox News are not going to bring up the insurance companies that are just going to keep everyone’s premiums and still give themselves a bonus. Free Luigi!”

As for how he’s handling evacuating his family and leaving everything behind? Burr kept it characteristically light and twisted: “It would be kind of cool to not own anything…. An opportunity to build a dream house! With the money I no longer have.”
