Nick Reiner Not Medically Cleared to Appear in Court After Arrest for Alleged Murder of Parents
· Rolling StoneNick Reiner was not medically cleared to appear in court on Tuesday after being arrested on suspicion of killing his parents, Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner, his attorney, Alan Jackson, confirmed to Rolling Stone.
Jackson told reporters outside the courtroom that Nick might appear as early as Wednesday, but that it would be a “day-to-day” decision.
On Sunday afternoon, Rob and Michelle Reiner were found dead in their Brentwood home. They were discovered by the Reiners’ daughter, Romy, Rolling Stone previously confirmed.
In a statement, police said Nick, 32, was located and arrested around 9:15 p.m. Sunday. They said their investigation revealed he “was responsible for their deaths.” He remains in custody without bail pending his first appearance.
Rob, whose breakout role came by way of playing Meathead in All in the Family before his incredible run as a director of beloved movies, including This is Spinal Tap, Stand by Me, When Harry Met Sally…, The Princess Bride, and A Few Good Men, previously worked with Nick on the 2016 movie Being Charlie. Nick co-wrote the script, a semi-autobiographical film about a troubled son battling drug addiction and a famous father, and Reiner directed the film.
Nick first went to rehab at the age of 15 and spent time in and out of facilities through his teenage years. At the age of 19, several years after being clean, he worked on Being Charlie.
“If I wanted to do it my way and not go to the programs they were suggesting, then I had to be homeless,” he told People in 2016, adding: “I was homeless in Maine. I was homeless in New Jersey. I was homeless in Texas. I spent nights on the street. I spent weeks on the street. It was not fun.”
Rob and Michele discussed the struggles Nick faced in rehab in an interview with the Los Angeles Times in 2015. “The program works for some people, but it can’t work for everybody,” Rob said. “When Nick would tell us that it wasn’t working for him, we wouldn’t listen. We were desperate, and because the people had diplomas on their wall, we listened to them when we should have been listening to our son.”

Michelle added, “We were so influenced by these people. They would tell us he’s a liar, that he was trying to manipulate us. And we believed them.”
