An auto-driver from Bengaluru made a passenger clean up the backseat before letting him leave, and the incident fuelled a larger conversation around civic sense and accountability in shared spaces.
The video, shared on X by Sanatana Kannada, showed the driver calmly but firmly asking a passenger to check the seat as he got down from the auto. The passenger initially brushed the seat lightly, assuming that would suffice, and began to walk away.
However, the driver, clearly attentive to the condition of his vehicle, turned back and noticed that some bits of dirt and litter still left behind. He immediately called the passenger back and insisted that the seat be cleaned properly. The passenger returned and made sure to wipe it thoroughly before finally leaving, as the driver watched on.
In the caption, the X account strongly backed the driver’s actions, stating, “A passenger pays only for the journey, not for the licence to clip nails, litter, or dirty the vehicle. Such a lack of civic sense is disappointing.”
It then emphasised that auto drivers should not hesitate to be firm in such situations, pointing out that the vehicle was their “daily bread” and something they had every right to protect.

The video prompted an important discussion on civic sense online, with many users agreeing that the driver’s response was justified and long overdue.
Several commenters pointed out that people often treated public or shared transport carelessly, forgetting that someone else had to clean up after them. They stressed that basic habits like not littering or leaving a mess should be common sense rather than something that needs to be enforced.
Others mentioned how clean the auto appeared in the video, adding that it was only fair for passengers to leave it in the same condition. Some also added that such actions, though small, set an important precedent, encouraging accountability in everyday behaviour.
At the same time, a few users added that the responsibility should be mutual, stating that while passengers must be mindful, drivers too should ensure their vehicles remain clean and well-maintained for everyone who uses them.
