Telangana woman lured to Oman with fake housekeeping job offer, stranded for a year

A Telangana woman, who was lured to Oman with a fake housekeeper job, has been stranded there for nearly a year. This prompted BRS leader KT Rama Rao to seek government intervention and her safe return to India.

A Telangana woman who travelled to Oman's Muscat in search of work as a housekeeper has been stranded in the Gulf country for nearly a year after the manpower agency that promised her employment turned out to be fraudulent.

Former Telangana Minister and BRS leader KT Rama Rao (KTR) has taken up the matter with the Revanth Reddy government, seeking immediate intervention and the safe return of Thuppudu Laxmi, a resident of Vikarabad district, back home.

In the letter to the Principal Secretary, General Administration (Political) Department, KTR said that Laxmi travelled to Muscat after being promised a housekeeper job through a manpower agency. The recruitment was facilitated by an agent in India and another agent based in Muscat.

However, after reaching Oman, Laxmi found that the agency had failed to provide the promised employment, accommodation and salary. She was subsequently left stranded in the country and is now in severe distress, KTR said.

The Sircilla MLA also said that Laxmi was suffering from serious health issues. "Despite making repeated requests for help, she has not been permitted to return to India," he said.

KTR urged the Telangana government to take up the matter with the Indian Embassy of Oman and ensure that Laxmi receives the necessary legal assistance. He also requested the authorities to initiate immediate steps for her repatriation to India.

“I earnestly request you to kindly take up the matter with the Indian Embassy in Muscat, Sultanate of Oman,” KTR said in his letter, while seeking legal assistance for Laxmi and steps for her immediate return.

The letter also identified the agents involved in the recruitment process and their contact details, which KTR said could help authorities pursue the matter.

The case comes amid recurring concerns over Indians being lured abroad with promises of jobs and subsequently facing exploitation, non-payment of wages or difficulties in returning home.
