US President Donald Trump on Friday announced that he would be increasing tariffs on cars and trucks from the European Union to 25 per cent from next week, claiming that the multi-nation bloc was not complying with the "fully agreed" trade deal.

He added that EU carmakers would not face any tariffs if they produced their cars and trucks in the United States.

Trump, who spent his first year in office raising or reducing tariffs on countries, took the opportunity to sell his 'Make In America' policy. "Many automobile and truck plants are currently under construction, with over $100 billion being invested, A RECORD in the History of car and truck manufacturing. These plants, staffed with American workers, will be opening soon," he posted on Truth Social.

This is a developing story. It will be updated.
