Mouldy bread, expired sauce, insects: Ahmedabad PG, 5 non-veg shops ordered to shut

The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) Food Department has ordered the closure of a paying guest (PG) kitchen in Ashram Road area and five non-vegetarian food shops in Tavdipura-Dudheshwar after inspections found multiple violations of prescribed food hygiene and sanitation standards at these facilities.

Officials found that the PG facility, Sunrise Living PG on Ashram Road, was serving meals to around 150 to 200 students and working professionals every day.

During an inspection, officials found that kitchen workers were not using basic protective gear such as caps, aprons and gloves.

The inspection also uncovered mouldy bread in the storage area, expired sauce and insects inside the kitchen premises.

The Food Department said the conditions amounted to violations of the hygiene and sanitation requirements prescribed under Schedule 4 of the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) regulations.

In view of the food safety concerns identified during the inspection, the civic body initiated closure action against the facility.

ACTION AGAINST 5 NON-VEG SHOPS

In a separate enforcement drive in the Shahibaug area, AMC officials inspected five shops selling mutton and chicken in Tavdipura and Dudheshwar, including establishments located opposite Daryakhan Ghummat.

The shops were identified as being operated by Mohammad Sagir Noor Mohammad Qureshi, Mohammad Sadiq Noor Mohammad Qureshi, Abdul Rahim Noor Mohammad Qureshi, Abdul Khalik Noor Mohammad Qureshi and Mohammad Samir Noor Mohammad Qureshi.

According to the civic body, inspections at all five establishments revealed unhygienic conditions and non-compliance with the food safety and sanitation requirements under FSSAI Schedule 4. Closure action was subsequently taken against the shops.

The AMC has also reiterated that businesses dealing in non-vegetarian food such as mutton and chicken must hold the required FSSAI registration or licence and adhere to prescribed food safety and hygiene norms.

Meat is required to be procured from authorised or registered slaughterhouses or suppliers.

Where meat is purchased from outside suppliers, operators must ensure that the source is FSSAI-licensed or registered.

Businesses are also expected to maintain purchase bills, supplier information and other relevant records for verification.

The civic body has further advised street food vendors and food operators across Ahmedabad to maintain cleanliness, follow personal hygiene practices and ensure that food served to consumers is safe.

It has encouraged businesses to use citizen feedback received through QR codes to improve services.

The AMC Food Department said inspections across the city will continue, with action to be taken against food adulteration, unhygienic practices, substandard products and other regulatory violations.

Further enforcement drives are expected as the civic body continues its food safety checks.
