In Short

  • Indian stock markets closed on May 1 for Maharashtra Day and Labour Day
  • BSE and NSE halt trading across all segments including equities and derivatives
  • NCDEX closed all day; MCX opens only in evening from 5 pm to 11:30 pm

If you are planning to trade today, the Indian stock market will remain shut on May 1 on account of Maharashtra Day and Labour Day.

Both the Bombay Stock Exchange and the National Stock Exchange are closed for trading across segments, as per the official holiday calendar.

There will be no trading in equities and related segments on either exchange. This includes equity trading, derivatives, currency derivatives, and securities lending and borrowing.

In addition, the agricultural commodity market National Commodity & Derivatives Exchange will remain closed for the entire day.

MCX TIMINGS TODAY

Commodity trading will follow a slightly different schedule.

The Multi Commodity Exchange of India will remain closed in the morning session but will reopen in the evening session between 5:00 pm and 11:30 pm.

This means traders in commodities will be able to place trades only in the evening window.

WHY IS THE MARKET CLOSED

The closure is due to Maharashtra Day, which is observed as a trading holiday by Indian stock exchanges every year. The day also coincides with Labour Day, which is marked globally.

As highlighted in the exchange holiday calendar, May 1 is one of the key non-trading days for domestic markets.

GLOBAL MARKETS TODAY

Several global markets are also shut on account of Labour Day.

Markets in China, Hong Kong and Singapore are closed, along with European exchanges such as France, Germany and Spain. However, markets in the US and the UK remain open and operate as usual.

Trading on Indian stock exchanges will resume on the next working day.

Investors should also note that holidays can impact settlement timelines, especially for trades executed before the long weekend.

STOCK MARKET HOLIDAY LIST 2026

According to the exchange calendar, the next stock market holiday after May 1 will fall on May 28 for Bakri Eid.

Other key holidays later in the year include Muharram (June 26), Ganesh Chaturthi (September 14), Gandhi Jayanti (October 2), Dussehra (October 20), Diwali Balipratipada (November 10), Guru Nanak Jayanti (November 24) and Christmas (December 25).

Interestingly, Diwali in 2026 falls on a Sunday, so regular trading will remain shut, but Muhurat Trading will be conducted on November 8, with timings to be announced later.
