Mahindra's Chakan facility hits 30 lakh production milestone with BE 6 EV

The facility now produces 19 models and over 450 variants, with the latest one million vehicles manufactured in just 27 months.

Mahindra and Mahindra has achieved a major manufacturing milestone, with its Chakan facility in Maharashtra rolling out its 30 lakhth vehicle. The milestone model is the BE 6 electric SUV, underlining the plant's transformation into a future-ready manufacturing hub capable of building both internal combustion engine (ICE) and electric vehicles.

The company said the achievement highlights the rapid growth of its manufacturing operations. While it took 107 months to produce the first one million vehicles at the plant, the latest one million units were manufactured in just 27 months, reflecting a significant increase in production capacity and demand.

Operational since December 2009, the 657-acre Chakan facility has become one of Mahindra's most important production hubs. It currently manufactures 19 models and more than 450 variants spanning passenger vehicles, electric vehicles and commercial vehicles.

The plant incorporates Industry 4.0 technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), Internet of Things (IoT), 5G connectivity, digital traceability and advanced robotics. Around 1,500 robots are deployed across the facility, with the body shop operating at over 98 per cent automation. Mahindra also uses 3D component scanning, real-time weld monitoring and AI-enabled safety systems to improve quality and efficiency.

Commenting on the milestone, R Velusamy, President , Automotive Business, Mahindra & Mahindra, said the accelerated production pace reflects growing customer confidence and the company's continued investment in advanced manufacturing technologies.

"The rollout of our three-millionth vehicle, the BE 6, from Chakan marks a proud milestone in Mahindra's manufacturing journey. The acceleration from 107 months for our first million vehicles to just 27 months for the latest million reflects the growing trust of our customers and the unwavering commitment of our people, partners and suppliers," he said.

Beyond manufacturing scale, Mahindra highlighted the facility's sustainability initiatives. More than 50 per cent of the plant's overall energy requirement is met through renewable energy sources, while electric vehicle production at Chakan operates entirely on renewable energy.

The company also said the facility is water positive, returning 131 per cent of the water it consumes back to nature through initiatives including annual rainwater recharge of nearly 9.91 lakh kilolitres. It is also certified as a Zero Waste to Landfill facility and is close to achieving its EP100 commitment of doubling energy productivity.

The Chakan plant also serves as a key export hub for Mahindra, with vehicles manufactured there being shipped to international markets including South Africa, Australia and New Zealand, supporting the company's global expansion plans.
