Auto retail sales hit record high in May, passenger vehicles lead growth: FADA
Automobile retail sales in India reached a record high for the month of May, driven by robust passenger vehicle demand and steady growth across segments, according to the latest data released by FADA.
by Saumya Shubham Jha · India TodayIndia's automobile retail market registered its strongest-ever performance for the month of May, with vehicle registrations across segments reaching a new high despite challenging market conditions, according to data released by the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA).
Total retail sales across passenger vehicles, two-wheelers, three-wheelers, commercial vehicles, tractors and construction equipment stood at 25,31,067 units in May 2026, marking a 9.55 per cent increase over the 23,10,451 units sold during the same month last year.
Passenger vehicles emerged as the biggest growth driver, with retail sales rising 23.25 per cent year-on-year to 4,02,591 units. The segment benefited from strong demand in rural markets, improving interest in small cars, sustained SUV demand and a wider acceptance of alternative fuel technologies.
Two-wheeler sales also maintained momentum, growing 7.54 per cent to 18,44,947 units compared to 17,15,581 units in May 2025. Dealers attributed demand to wedding-season purchases and steady rural participation, although extreme summer temperatures impacted showroom footfalls in several regions.
Three-wheeler registrations increased 3.56 per cent year-on-year to 1,11,526 units, while commercial vehicle sales rose 5.29 per cent to 83,823 units. Tractor sales, meanwhile, posted double-digit growth of 11.17 per cent, reflecting continued strength in the agricultural economy.
Commenting on the performance, FADA President C S Vigneshwar said the industry had managed to sustain growth despite facing multiple headwinds, including a severe heatwave, higher fuel prices and geopolitical developments in West Asia.
"May 2026 registered the best-ever May across three-wheelers, passenger vehicles, tractors and overall vehicle registrations," he said, adding that the resilience of demand was particularly noteworthy given the seasonally softer market conditions during the month.
The association also highlighted a growing consumer shift towards alternative powertrains following the recent fuel price revision. Electric vehicles accounted for 9.25 per cent of two-wheeler sales and 6.63 per cent of passenger vehicle sales during the month, while CNG vehicles represented 23.34 per cent of passenger vehicle registrations.
Looking ahead, dealers remain cautiously optimistic about June. According to FADA's survey, 50.52 per cent of dealers expect sales growth, while 39.90 per cent anticipate a stable market and only 9.59 per cent foresee a decline.
The industry's near-term outlook will depend largely on the progress of the southwest monsoon, the pace of Kharif sowing and rural income trends. FADA noted that a stable financing environment, aided by the Reserve Bank of India's decision to maintain the repo rate at 5.25 per cent, should provide additional support to demand in the coming months.
