A clash broke out between two groups during a Ganesh idol immersion procession in Maharashtra's Thane district, police said, news agency PTI reported.

Tensions flared around midnight on September 19 after the two sides argued over moving their respective Ganapati immersion processions ahead of each other.

According to the police, the confrontation rapidly escalated as both groups were involved in abusing and threatening each other, and resorting to physical violence. The situation also led to traffic disruption in the area, police told PTI.

Following the incident, police registered a case against more than 40 people, including a few prominent local figures, from both sides.

Beyond the physical assault and public disturbance, officials also cited several statutory violations, including the unauthorised use of loudspeakers without prior permission.
